About Us

Who we are

I am Ishan Khire, a 12th grade student at Manthan School. I am very passionate about extending economic development in India to villages to improve the lives of people that live in rural areas. My economics and research experience includes:

  • Publishing a research paper on livestock intensification in India
  • Using data science and conducting literature reviews as a research assistant to a professor studying village planning
  • Coming 2nd in the National Economics Olympiad

In my free time, I enjoy debating for the Indian debate team, playing chess, and learning new math!

Our Vision

Decentralized planning in India continues to be studied extensively due to it’s importance in strengthening grassroots democracy and bringing development to rural areas. However, there is a large gap in analyzing the effectiveness of gram panchayat (village) development plans (GPDPs). We aim to collect and aggregate GPDP data for researchers to study, to answer key questions such as:

  • How do estimated costs of development activities compare with funds received by panchayats and total spending?
  • What are the sectors in which plans are most likely to be implemented?
  • Does spending on sectors such as sanitation translate to actual improvements in human development indicators?

The ultimate goal of this project is to ensure that the analysis translates into tangible improvements in village development outcomes. To achieve this, we collaborate with other researchers, NGOs, and the government to implement policy proposals to improve governance.

Some of the work we have done so far

Gram Panchayat Development Plan Analytics

Analyze GPDPs at district and village level and budgeted and actual spends. Combine with insights from human development indices to analyze the impact of developmental works.

Livestock Intensification Analytics

Examine the co-relation between per capita GDP income in state and district and level of intensification in livestock. Can farmers get rich in a sustainable way ?
